Former NYSC DG arraigned for electoral malpractices

UYO (Sundiata Post) – A former director-general of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Maj.Gen. Edet Akpan (rtd) was on Wednesday arraigned before an Uyo
Magistrate Court on a six-count charge of electoral malpractices by the Directorate of Security Services (DSS).
The former NYSC boss, who looked weak and forlorn in appearance, was accused of snatching ballot boxes and ballot papers meant for the
governorship and State House of Assembly elections at Iwok village, Nsit AtaiLGA of Akwa Ibom State. He pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The magistrate, Winifred Umoa Handi, however granted him bail in the sum of N2 million. The case has been adjourned to May 4 for further hearing.

An aide of the former NYSC Director-General, who spoke anonymously, stated that Edet Akpan was erroneously arrested after youths who were protesting the conduct of the elections in Iwok village snatched ballot boxes and ballot papers and took them to the retired General’s residence as a means of safeguarding the electoral process.
