“The new chief justice is coming at the most difficult time for the judiciary and he will be having very difficult task restoring the damaged image of the organ.
“I congratulate him as I also expect him to immediately swing into action in addressing the high level of corruption particularly in the bench,’’ he said.
The former Speaker, who is also a lawyer, commended the efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari in fighting corruption and urged the other arms of government to complement it.
He stressed that “it is disastrous for the judiciary which is the last hope of the common man to be involved in corruption’’.
Amaechi said that with Justice Onnoghen’s qualification and competence, he had no doubt that he would rid the judiciary of the menace of corruption.
He also called for quick confirmation of Onnoghen as a substantive CJN.
NAN recalls that Onnoghen was sworn-in in acting capacity to replace the former CJN, Justice Mahmud Mohammed who retired at the mandatory age of 70 years.
