UMUAHIA – Mr Victor Muruako, the acting Chairman, Fiscal Responsibility Commission (FRC), has expressed displeasure with the attitude of the contractor handling Abariba-Arochukwu Road in Abia.
Muruako made this known on Friday when he led a project verification team from the commission to inspect the level of work on the road.
“Only 9.74 per cent of the 28.24 kilomtres road which was awarded to Beks Kimse Nigeria Ltd at a cost of N2.26 billion in 2012 had been completed as at the time of the verification.
“From what we saw on the Abariba-Ohafia Arochuckwu Road, I must tell you that we are not impressed.
“The stretch from Bende; particularly from Ohafia to Arochuckwu is a death trap. [eap_ad_2] “The contractor has abandoned site and seemed not interested in completing this road and saving the people the hardship of going through a bad road,’’ he said.
Muruako alleged that the contractor seemed to lack the capacity to do the job, adding that certain questions might arise how he secured the contract.
He said the work was progressing slowly because the contractor chose to commence work from the end of the road rather than from the beginning.
A representative of Beks Kimse Nigeria Ltd., Mr Temple Chukwuemeka, the engineer on site, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the work was progressing slowly.
“It is just logistics problem. Agreed work is slow; but quality is not compromised,’’ he said.
Youths from the community told members of the verification team that the contractor was never on site.
Mr David Obaji who spoke on behalf of the youth said:
“Please tell Abuja people that we have not seen the contractor in months. He only came to site five days ago.
“Every time we see his workers here, it means that a monitoring team is coming for inspection.
“As you are leaving, they are following you behind; the contractor is sleeping on this project and we are tired.
“If not for the fact that Arochukwu people are peaceful people, we would have beaten up the workers,’’ Obaji said (NAN)[eap_ad_3]
