Tragedy struck the troubled community of Okuama in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State as one person was reported dead and three others critically injured in a recent outbreak of violence. The clash, rooted in a longstanding land dispute between Okuama, an Urhobo enclave, and Okoloba, an Ijaw community in Bomadi LGA, escalated just 48 hours after the withdrawal of soldiers from the area.
The conflict reignited memories of the brutal killing of soldiers near Okuama on March 14, 2024, prompting a military siege on the community. Despite assurances from Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for the safe return of displaced Okuama indigenes, fresh violence erupted as residents attempted to reclaim their homes.
According to reports, indigenes returning to Okuama were ambushed and attacked with machetes while traversing a bush path toward Ezebiri community. One victim, in critical condition, recounted being accosted at gunpoint by Okuama returnees, while others were directed towards the community waterfront.
Confirming the attack, a native of a neighboring community described armed confrontations between Okuama and Akugbene youths, resulting in casualties on both sides. Despite two Akugbene youths escaping unharmed, one victim succumbed to injuries upon returning to their community.
Mr. Clement Koki, Chairman of Okoloba community, expressed commitment to peace efforts, emphasizing reliance on divine protection amidst escalating tensions. Despite the withdrawal of military presence, communities affected by the conflict remain vigilant, hoping for lasting resolutions to foster peace and stability in the region.
