ONITSHA (ANAMBRA) – The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) on Wednesday mobilised pupils in all the primary schools in Onitsha, Anambra, to embrace its road safety club and education of the public.
The event tagged “A Child Safety Campaign,’’ was organised by Arrive Alive Road Safety Initiative in collaboration with the FRS)
.
The Unit Commander of the commission in Onitsha, Mr Anthony Metta, said the gathering together of the pupils was a dream come true.
He said the commission had been looking for ways to catch the youth to participate in its activities.
Metta noted that the commission decided to focus on the children and the younger generation to correct all road anomalies, which led to daily carnage caused by human errors.
“With these children learning about safety tips at this tender age and imbibing them; our country will soon have the safest roads as well as cautious drivers.

“With the rate at which they imbibe the message coupled with other materials distributed to them and their schools, I believe we have gained a generation of people who will be highly safety conscious,’’ he said.
The Executive Secretary of Arrive Alive Road Safety Initiative, Mr Ike Okonkwo, said that the non-governmental organisation had invested millions of naira printing comic and pictorial booklets to communicate road safety tips to the children.
Okonkwo said that the organisation had also composed safety songs to make the message a household one for the children, while there would be safety display boards at the entrance of each school.
“What we have been doing for some years is to make sure we form road safety clubs in schools as well as device a means to convey the safety measure to the children.
“And it has been effective, you can see how the children were responding to the questions and following the lectures.
“I believe that the work of the FRSC will be made easier in a few years because this generation will do better than the present generation,’’ he said.
Okonkwo said that the campaign would have a follow-up in each of the schools in Onitsha through the FRSC regular and special marshals as well as FRSC-NYSC Safety Club.
In a goodwill message, the Co-ordinator of the FRSC Special Marshals and Partnership, Mr Ben Osaka, thanked the organization for its investment and love to see that children and by extension Nigerians were safe on the roads. (NAN)
