Lagos- The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) said on Saturday that the commission was committed to implementing the speed limiting device following the risk attached to speeding.
The Deputy Corps Marshal of FRSC, Mr Ademola Lawal, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that 80 per cent of the road crashes were caused by excessive speeding.
Lawal urged road users to avoid speeding as they travel for Eid el-Kabir celebration to prevent loss of lives and property.
“I am making the appeal against the backdrop of the high vehicular movement on the highways in the build up to Sallah.
“Many drivers, when stopped for speeding, will deny, saying they have not exceeded 40 or 60km/h per.
“But with the installation of speed limiting device, speed will be checked, road crashes will reduce and losses will be a thing of the past.
“We are starting with commercial buses because of the capacity of people they move on the road, although many private motorists are also willing to use the device.
“Road Safety does not sell the device or fix it but there are certified agents by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) who are in charge of it,” Lawal said.
He said that the corps was not happy at the rate of crashes on roads.
According to him, FRSC has sent out all its Deputy Corps Marshals to various zones across the country to educate transport unions on the speed limiting device and it enforcement from Oct. 1.
