Awka -The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Anambra Command, says it will intensify the war against drivers who plied the roads under the influence of alcohol.
Mr Sunday Ajayi, the Sector Commander of the FRSC in the state, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Wednesday.
Ajayi said the sanitization war which was a combined operation between the FRSC and the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) , would be in all parts of the state.
He said the target of the command was to achieve a sane motoring public, noting that human error was the major reasons why motor accidents on Nigerian roads were on the rise.
He said that the combined team of FRSC and NDLEA officials would raid motor parts to arrest sellers of alcohol and drivers with evidence of alcohol and narcotic intake.
He said the patrol had become imperative with the increasing rainfall, adding that the commission would also be interested in both the mechanical and physical conditions of vehicles.
Ajayi urged all motorists to ensure that they had the basic necessities of road worthiness of vehicles such as good tyres, wipers, break and lightening systems and fire extinguisher, among others.
He warned that offenders would be prosecuted according to the laws guiding road traffic and drug misuse.
“The war against drug and alcohol has commenced in the state; we are partnering with the NDLEA to teach motorists what they need to know about the effects of these items.
“It is a statewide advocacy which has entered the enforcement stage; we are going to the motor parks and there will also be stop-and-inspect operation, to check offenders.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”10”]
“This is in line with the position of the Anambra Government that road traffic crashes must be reduced to the barest minimum.
“The sale of alcohol in the parks remain banned and consumption of intoxicating items is an offence,” he said.(NAN)
