KATSINA – The President, Nigeria Guild of Editors, Mr Femi Adesina, on Thursday advised the country’s electoral body to conduct free, fair and credible elections in 2015 to entrench good governance.
Adesina gave the advice in Katsina at the opening of the 10th All Nigerian Editors Conference.
“In 2015, we want nothing less than free, fair and credible polls; we want elections that are not only free, but also seen to be free, elections that are only fair but also applauded as fair.
“And elections that are not only credible, but which even the blind will see to have been credible,’’ he said.
He said that “good governance’’ could be secured through credible elections.
Adesina said that when public officers got their powers through such processes, they would struggle to justify it.[eap_ad_2]
“’They do all within their powers to sustain the confidence people have reposed in them,’’ he said.
He, however, explained that when public officers got their powers through artificial means or sleight of hand, they develop an indifferent attitude.
Adesina said that was why the theme: “’Credible Elections and Good Governance: the role of the editor” was chosen.
In his remarks, the Senate President, Mr David Mark, said that journalism entailed a high degree of public trust.
Represented by Sen. Mijitapha Muhammad, the Senate Special Adviser on Political Matters, Mark noted that editors were get keepers who ensure quality control of the media.
He said that issues of national interests like security should be carefully reported for peaceful coexistence, considering the current security challenge facing the country. (NAN)[eap_ad_3]
