Lagos – Gov. Akinwumi Ambode of Lagos State on Thursday warned residents to desist from refuse dumping, defecating and polluting the waterways to boost water transportation and ensure safety on the waterways.
Ambode spoke at the inauguration of two Water Hyacinth and Debris Removal Machines at the Ebute Ero Jetty in Lagos.
The governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Environment, Dr Babatunde Adejare, said water hyacinth, otherwise known as aquatic weed, had been a major challenge to the waterways sector.
Ambode said the machines were acquired to address the challenges posed by water hyacinth, adding that this was in line with the strategic implementation of Lagos master plan for the waterways.
“Water hyacinth has been a problem for us in this lagoon and it is time to tackle it.
“The machines will encourage water transportation and fishery; this initiative is necessary now that we are working toward clean-up of the waterways,’’ Ambode said.
Earlier, the Managing Director of the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), Mrs Abisola Kamson said the machines would go a long way in removing water hyacinth on marine ecosystems of the state.
Kamson said that the weeds were particularly noticeable at Ikorodu, Ajah, Badagry, Lagos Island, Oworonshoki, Mile 2 and Epe axis.
“The water hyacinth cause mechanical problems to propulsion system of boats thus affecting water transportation aside negatively affecting the socio-economic activities of fishermen and inhabitants of the riverine communities.
“Water hyacinth which is a seasonal threat has brought about damages,’’ Kamson said.
Explaining the workings of the machine, Kamson said it acts like an underwater lawn mower and cuts the vegetation.
She said it collects and stores weeds and debris.
According to her, it is fitted with a pick up conveyor at the forward end and can be lowered up to six feet deep into the water for effective cleaning of the waterways.
Kamson said the machines would be deployed immediately for clean-up of the waterways, adding that the Ministry of Environment would increase monitoring activities on the waterways.
She said that those who disrespect the waterways through dumping of waste, pollution, defecation and other illegal activities would be made to face the full wrath of the law.
Also, the Commissioner for Tourism, Mr Folarin Coker said the machines would boost tourism, especially travelling on the state’s coastal line.
He also urged the people to desist from dumping refuse into the lagoon.
The Chairman, Lagos State Chapter of Association of Tourism Boat Water Operators, Chief Wellington Ilori-Akingbulu commended the governor for the initiative.
He said the machines would go a long way in checking incessant accidents and engine problems caused by water hyacinth and debris.
