– Hajiya Hauwa Yuguda, the Wife of Governor Isa Yuguda of , has donated a plot of land to the Traditional Healers Association to plant assorted plants to enhance their practice.
Yuguda, who is also the founder of Persons Living with Disabilities, made the donation on Friday in Bauchi when members of the association led by its Chairman, Alhaji Nuhu Waziri, visited her.
She said that with the donation, members of the association could plant more than 700 species of trees and herbs to extract traditional medicines.
The wife of the governor expressed dismay on recent trends where some foreigners were exploiting traditional healers by exporting their products abroad.
According to her, the foreigners are making more gains by exporting the local herbal products than members of the association.
She advised the association to expose dubious members selling products to enable herbal products compete favourably with orthodox medicines.
According to her, more employment can be generated for the youths if traditional medicine is boosted.
Earlier, Waziri said that the association’ quest for planting such trees and shrubs became necessary as most of needed species were going out of extinction.
This, he said, was due to illegal felling and exploitation of trees as well as bush burning.
Waziri said that the planting would protect the species, while members could transplant some of these species in their various localities.
He said that the to establish a plantation followed the discovery by members that more than 700 species of trees and shrubs with medicinal values were being destroyed indiscriminately. (NAN)
