Jos, – As the world marks International Peace Day, the International Federation of Women Lawyers(FIDA) has called for reconciliation in Plateau communities to foster severed relationship and restore peace in the State.
Mrs Mary Izam, the Chairperson of FIDA in Plateau, told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Jos, that Plateau had suffered many communal attacks and loss of lives as well as property recently.
“ It is day of reflection of the attacks that bedeviled Plateau recently. It is important for us to continuously remind ourselves of the need of peace to facilitate economic growth.
“ Mutual understanding between various ethnic and religious groups is paramount to foster unity,’’ she said.
The FIDA official said all members of the society should eradicate all form of differences to chart way for rapid development and opinion leaders should preach peace not hate amongst their followers.
She said that the 2018 theme: “The Right to Peace: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights at 70 is apt as a reminder that the infringement of human rights can lead to warring situations’’.
Izam tasked security agencies, the judiciary and other relevant bodies to enforce the respect of human rights of all members of the society and punish defaulters to serve as deterrent to others.
