PORT HARCOURT – Former Secretary of Nigeria Bar Association, Mr Nimi Walson-Jack, on Wednesday, said President Goodluck Jonathan’s humility in defeat was a sign that democracy could thrive in Africa.

Walson-Jack, a governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt that it was rare for an African leader to concede defeat and congratulate the winner.

He said Jonathan took the right step which should serve a tone for his supporters.
He added that “I think the President has taken the right step which has also set the tone for the rest of us, his supporters, by conceding defeat and congratulating the winner.
“He has doused the tension that some people believe that elections in Nigeria or Africa is a do-or-die affair, but they are not.’’
The former NBA scribe said Nigerians had demonstrated that they could give in and know when to fight.
“The election is over. The contest has been won. We congratulate the President elect.
“We always believe in taking a stand on issues . We took a stand to support Jonathan because we are members of PDP.’’
The secretary urged the President elect to work for the development of the country.
He said President Jonathan did well for the country and that history would judge him fairly for doing his best for the country. (NAN)
