KANO – The Kano State Government recorded two fresh cases of wild polio virus type 1 in the first quarter of 2014 in two local government areas of the state.The affected councils are Tarauni and Gaya local government areas.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Abubakar Labaran, disclosed this in Kano on Thursday at a meeting with Journalists Against Polio.
The commissioner, who spoke through the Executive Secretary of the State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr Shehu Usman, also disclosed that 160 cases of measles were recorded in 30 local government areas of the state.
He added that the state had covered 72 per cent for all antigens as against the 79 per cent targetted for immunisation during the period under review.
According to him, efforts have been intensified to improve immunisation of the more than two million children below the age of five targetted in the affected areas.
“Our efforts extended to the training of vaccinators and deployment of teams in densely populated areas of the state as well as public enlightenment.” (NAN)
