Kaduna- The Kaduna State Government says it has awarded contract worth N8 billion to Mothercat Limited for the expansion of Zaria water works, to boost potable water supply.
The Commissioner for Water Resources, Mr Suleman Lere, disclosed this on Wednesday in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) after the signing of the contract in Kaduna.
Lere said that the expansion project was in two categories and would be executed within 18 months .
‘’The first is the construction of 63 kilometres transmission lines at the cost of N4.6 billion while the second contract is the construction of eight service reservoirs billed for N3.6 billion.
“ The service reservoir will be overhead, underground, steel, and concrete tanks while some will be on top of famous rocks in Wusasa,’’ he said.`
He added that the reservoir would be located at the booster station in Zaria city, Dambo and Tudun Wada with underground tanks to keep the required treated water for pumping.
The commissioner said that the Zaria water project had suffered a lot of setback in the past, but assured that it would be completed by the present administration.
“The transmission lines will have the capacity of supplying 150 million litres of water per day to people of Zaria and environs.
“People are eager to see water running from their taps as part of the dividend of democracy.
“It is going to be a regional project that will cover eight local government areas of the state in the second phase of the expansion project.
“The Nasir El-Rufai led-administration will do everything possible to address the problem of water supply in the state.”
Also, Mr Ghassan Al Damaa, who signed on behalf of Mothercat, told NANA that the company would work diligently to meet the deadline for the completion of the project.
“We are very happy to be involved in infrastructure development of Kaduna State and the confidence reposed in us.
“We have carried out various World Bank financed projects in this state successfully and because we have our head office in Kaduna, we consider ourselves part of the state, “he said.
