Lagos – Abul-Malik Mohammad, the Chief Instructor of Korea Cultural Centre on Thursday says the Korea Ambassador Taekwondo Championships, when commenced Lagos would aim at further promoting the sport in the country.
Mohammad told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the sport, which originated from Korea had for six years enjoyed the sponsorship of Korea Cultural Centre in Nigeria.
He said that the cultural centre is under the Korea Embassy in the country.
Mohammed explained that the idea was to continue to update and expose taekwondoists to the modern standards of the game. “Taekwondo originates from Korea and we recognised it as the fastest growing martial arts in the country.
“That was one of the reasons that we are collaborating with the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation to promote the sport. This is an international championship, which has been sustained over the past six years’’.
He added that an electronic scoring equipment was being used at the championship.
“The equipment, an Olympic standard facility was being used. The purpose is to get the practitioners acquainted with the application, ahead of international competitions,’’ he said.

A tournament supervisor, Emmanuel Oghenejobo, said that no fewer than 185 taekwondoists would participate in the championship and hailed the large turnout.
He said that the event would feature creative pomsea, special skill, normal pomsea and real fights.
NAN reports that competition would be officiated by internationally certified taekwondo referees.
The championship was holding at the Teslim Balogun Stadium from Dec. 10 to Dec. 12. (NAN)
