ABUJA – Lagos, the epicentre of coronavirus in Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Saturday got observers worried as both cities recorded new infections in huge numbers.
According to the report by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), there were 220 new cases out of which Lagos and the FCT reported 62 and 52 new infections respectively. They were followed by Kaduna with 31 new cases.
Surprisingly, there was no new infection reported in Kano, which has become the focus of attention lately on account of unusually high number of deaths from unknown causes.
For two days consecutively namely Thursday, 30 April and Friday, 1 May, 2020, Kano overtook Lagos in the number of new COVID-19 cases.
In all the total confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Nigeria as at Saturday, 2 May is 2,388.
The number of COVID-19 patients discharged moved up from 351 on Friday to 385 on Saturday, according to the NCDC report.
However, a worrisome trend is the continuous increase in the number of deaths from the pandemic in Nigeria. The casualty figure moved from 68 deaths as at Friday to 85 on Saturday, meaning that Nigeria lost 17 people to COVID-19 on Saturday. That is the highest number of deaths from COVID-19 since the virus made its debut in Nigeria in February.
