LAGOS – The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has advised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to make adequate preparations to ensure the successful conduct of the 2015 general elections.
The Chairman, NBA, Ikeja branch, Mr Yinka Farounbi, gave the advice in Lagos on Friday while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Farounbi said that early preparations by the electoral body would help to reduce the hitches witnessed in the recently concluded distribution of permanent voter cards in some states.
“INEC is the agency that will determine the outcome of the 2015 elections. If they get it right, I can assure you that there will be no crisis in Nigeria,” he said.
Farounbi said that INEC must be truly independent and remain a neutral political umpire in order for the elections to be credible, free, fair and transparent.
The NBA boss also urged political parties to play the game in accordance with the rules and make the electioneering issue-based.
Speaking on the same issue, Mr Alex Mouka, Chairman, NBA, Lagos branch, said that Nigerians were desirous of good governance from the political elite.
Mouka said, “Nigerians are very easy people. What we want is quality leadership and the government that will provide the basic things that we require such as power, infrastructure and security.” (NAN)
