ABUJA – Augustine Okechalu, 38, has been arraigned in a Wuse Zone 2 Senior Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, for alleged impersonation and forgery.
The accused, a resident of post Army Housing Estate, Kurudu, Abuja, is also charged with obstructing a police officer on duty.
Police prosecutor, Sgt. Atteh Effiong, told the court that the matter was reported at the Kurudu Divisional Police Station by ASP. Okporo Jerry on Aug. 13.
“The accused commanded the police officer who was controlling traffic at Karu roundabout, to stop other vehicles in order for him to move on.
“The accused also showed the traffic warder a police identity card, identifying himself as an Assistant Superintendent of Police.’’[eap_ad_2]
Effiong said the conduct of the accused necessitated the traffic warder to order his arrest.
The prosecutor said the accused confessed to have forged the identity card by imposing the name ‘Harrison Onyila’ on it as his name.
The prosecutor said investigation also revealed that the accused forged the ID card to enable him to convey and distribute Indian hemp to his customers.
Effiong said the fake identity card was to enable him to evade arrest.
The prosecutor said the offences contravened the provisions of sections 132, 364 and 148 of the Penal Code.
The accused, however, denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty to the crimes.
Senior Magistrate Usman Shuaibu granted him bail in the sum of N1million with a surety who must be a civil servant not below GL.12.
Shuaibu said the surety must have a traceable address which must be within the court’s jurisdiction and adjourned the matter to Oct. 14 for hearing. (NAN)[eap_ad_3]
