Abuja – A 36-year-old man, Gibson Edet, was on Friday arraigned in a Karshi Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly duping his neighbours of N86,699.
The defendant, a resident of old chief palace, Karu, Abuja, is facing charges bordering on criminal breach of trust, cheating and criminal misappropriation.
The prosecutor, Mahmud Lawal, told the court that one Babe Kaniru, of same address with the defendant, reported the matter at the Karu Police Station on Oct. 12.
“According to the complainant, sometime in 2016, the entire compound contributed N86,699 for monthly electricity bill and handed it over to the defendant to pay.
“But with intent to cheat the entire compound, the defendant dishonestly converted the whole money to his personal use,” Lawal said.
The prosecutor said that the offences, which the defendant denied committing, contravened the provisions of Sections 312, 322 and 309 of the Penal Code.
The judge, Aliyu Kagarko, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200, 000 with one surety in like sum, and adjourned the case until Nov.16 for hearing.
