Moderate earthquakes jolt SW China, 45,000 affected


Kunming (China)  – Two moderate earthquakes hit a prefecture in southwest China’s Yunnan Province on Wednesday, forcing 6,800 people to evacuate and damaging 38,000 houses.

According to the Provincial Civil Affairs Department, a 5.0-magnitude quake struck Yunlong County in Bai Autonomous Prefecture of Dali at 12:48 a.m.

It added that another 4.6-magnitude quake struck Eryuan County in the same prefecture 17 minutes later.

The quakes affected 45,200 people in Yunlong, Eryuan and a third neighbouring county and left two injured.

It noted that a total of 192 houses collapsed.

However, local authorities had allocated 200 tents, 2,000 folding beds, 4,000 quilts, 4,000 sets of clothing and 2,000 coats to the affected regions.

They also earmarked 2.5 million Yuan (383,000 dollars) for disaster relief.

Report said Yunlong had a low population density of 47 people per square km, while their local buildings were mainly made of brick and concrete, as well as wood and tile. (Xinhua/NAN)
