Lafia – Nasarawa Amazons Football Club of Lafia on Wednesday began their 2016/2017 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) season with a 2-0 win against Osun Babes FC of Osogbo.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the NWFL Match Day 1 encounter was played at the Lafia Township Stadium on Wednesday.
The win was courtesy of two goals in the first half, and the Amazons held on in the second half in spite of spirited efforts by the away team.
Mathias Josephine put the Amazons ahead through a sublime free-kick in the 25th minute.
The second goal was scored by Imo Anam who beat goalkeeper Christian Ohieraku in a one-on-one encounter to double the lead in the 37th minute.
In spite of the loss, Bashir Liadi, Head Coach of Osun Babes FC, praised his team for fighting gallantly till the end.
He however said his side would have gotten something from the game if the weather had been warmer.
“It was a good game, and the girls had to cope with the harsh weather. Yet in the second half, we came out strongly, even though we could not penetrate to score.
“So, we need to work harder. I think we gave a good account of ourselves,” he said.
On his part, Christopher Danjuma, Technical Adviser of Nasarawa Amazons, said his side would do all it takes to maintain the momentum so as to win the league.
“Even if we win 10-0, every coach still wants improvement. We will do all it takes to maintain this winning momentum.
“Against Confluence Queens, it will be a tough match, but we will go there more determined and more focused,” he said.
