Akure – The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in Ondo State has seized 14, 247.61 kg of various psychotropic substances within the last six months.
Mr Haruna Gagara, the Commander of the NDLEA in the state, said this at a press conference to mark the United Nations Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
The 2018 celebration has as theme: “ Listen First-Listening to Children and Youth is the First Step to Help Them Grow Healthy and Safe.’’
Gagara said the psychotropic substance comprises of 13,916 kg of Cannabis Sativa, 2.9g of cocaine, 3.2g of Heroine, 8.65kgs of Tramadol and 333.75 litres of Skuchies weighing 322.8kg.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 123 suspects made up of 113 males and 10 females were arrested within the period.
NAN also reports that 11 male persons were convicted and sentenced to various jail terms.
According to Gagara, four vehicles and two houses used in transportation and storage of illicit drugs respectively were seized and would subsequently be forfeited to the Federal Government.
“Sixty-three suspects referred from supply reduction unit were counselled, 33 public enlightenment programmes were held in the state while two offenders are currently undergoing counselling and rehabilitation.
“It is worrisome to also report the emergence of a new unconventional drug abuse called Skuchies in Ondo State, particularly in Akure.
“This drug is a mixture of Cannabis Sativa, Tramadol and Codeine in black currant juice or zobo.
“ It produces effects similar to those of conventional drugs and it is widely abused by youths,” he said.
