Abuja – Non- governmental and civil society organisations based in Africa have been invited to apply for the ONE Africa Award which attracts a prize of 100,000 dollars.
ONE Campaign, an NGO, said the prize would be given in November to organisations that contributed to promoting the Millennium Development Goals.
This is contained in a statement by the Country Representative of ONE Campaign, Mr Edwin Ikhuoria and given to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Wednesday.
The statement quoted Dr Sipho Moyo, Executive Director of ONE Campaign, as saying that it was inviting NGOs and CSOs based in Africa to apply for the ONE Africa Award.
“As we have learnt over the years through the ONE Award process, there are hundreds of African organisations that are working to make a positive difference in their communities.
“Usually, they make these differences with minimum resources and sometimes under unfriendly environments.
“Our goal with the ONE Award is to recognize such organisations and this is special, coming at a time the world is preparing to adopt the new Sustainable development Goals (SDGs) ’’, it said.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”70560″]
The statement added that the award would recognise Africa-driven advocacy that had demonstrated success and impacted at community, regional or national levels.
It pointed out that the awards are underwritten by an endowment from Howard Buffet Foundation, U.S.
“Following the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals at the UN General Assembly, such organisations in Africa would be provided with a broader and deeper framework to fight poverty.’’
It explained that SDGs was targeted at ensuring that poverty was reduced to the barest minimum in Africa by 2030.
It recalls that since the adoption of the MDGs in 2000, significant progress had been made to end extreme poverty and preventable diseases in Africa.
The statement said the organisations would be awarded based on their innovative skills, result-orientation, accountability, partnership and bonus on the MDGs. (NAN)
