Abuja – Dr Jacob Nwachukwu, the President, Blood Pressure Control Foundation, Nigeria, has advised Nigerians to cultivate the habit of being happy, saying it could normalise blood pressure.
Nwachukwu gave the advice during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Tuesday ahead of the `World Happiness Day’ celebration scheduled for March 20.
He said in spite of the challenges of life, one should always be happy.
“Happiness should be an everyday thing and not once in a while and doing positive things that will make you happy, it is not by going to beer parlor or eating foods that are not healthy.
“Being angry, quarrelsome will trigger some level of stress and even increase one’s blood pressure, one should be careful.
“If one is unhappy or having challenges in life, try and share it with your closest friend instead of holding it in because it has adverse effect on the health,’’ he said.
Nwachukwu said hypertension was the most common stress-related ailment that affected many silently.
He said hypertension was a chronic medical condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries was elevated.
“One being over happy cannot trigger blood pressure, instead, it will normalise; one system will be calmer and stabilise emotions.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”70560″]
“ Associate with groups or individuals that will make you happy, be cheerful and have friendly countenance always,’’ Nwachukwu advised.
He said that the `World Happiness Day’ celebrated every March 20, was meant to enhance people’s well being and recognise the relevance of being happy.
Nwachukwu advised that the day should be celebrated appropriately as it reflected on the society.
NAN reports that the World happiness Day marked annually by the UN as a fundamental human goal, calls upon countries to approach public policies in ways that improve the well-being of all peoples.
The UN aims to focus world attention on the idea that economic growth must be inclusive, equitable, and balanced, such that it promotes sustainable development, and alleviates poverty.
Additionally, the UN acknowledges that in order to attain global happiness, economic development must be accompanied by social and environmental well being. (NAN)
