The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has strongly criticized the removal of Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN) and Comrade Ifeanyi Ejiofor from the legal team of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
Calling it a significant misstep, HURIWA emphasized the duo’s invaluable contributions to Kanu’s defense and urged for a reevaluation of the legal strategy. According to HURIWA Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, the timing of their removal amidst Kanu’s legal battle is crucial, especially considering the recent setbacks in securing bail for Kanu due to health challenges.
HURIWA praised Ozekhome and Ejiofor for their exemplary representation, highlighting their legal acumen and unwavering commitment despite facing personal risks, including alleged assassination attempts.
The organization expressed concern over attempts to vilify the ousted lawyers and urged Kanu’s new legal team to prioritize securing his release without casting aspersions on esteemed advocates like Ozekhome and Ejiofor.
Recognizing the legal triumphs achieved by the former legal team, HURIWA emphasized the urgent need for impartial and diligent representation in Kanu’s case, citing previous failures to comply with court orders for his release.
