Beijing – The Chinese Foreign Minister insisted on Wednesday that North Korea must pay a necessary price under a new UN resolution against the North’s fourth nuclear test and launch of a long-range rocket this year.
Wang Yi, said in Bejing after a meeting with his Australian counterpart, Julie Bishop, that China was in full support of a new UN resolution that made North Korea pay the necessary price.
Yi described the North Korea’s nuclear test and rocket launch as serious violations of the existing UN resolutions against Pyongyang.
He, however, said a UN resolution against North Korea must include a condition to resume long-stalled six-party talks on the North’s nuclear weapons programme.
Meanwhile, an ambassador said on condition of anonymity that the UN Security Council members remained divided over how to punish North Korea for its fourth nuclear test on Jan. 6 and Feb. 7 rocket launch.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”70560″]
He said with China, one of five veto-wielding council members, reluctant to put crippling sanctions on North Korea.
The ambassador noted that winning China’s cooperation was the key to enforcing stronger sanctions against North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs because China is the North’s economic lifeline.
Analysts, however, said Beijing has been reluctant to put crippling sanctions on Pyongyang.(Yonhap/NAN)
