Abuja (Sundiata Post) – National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons and Other Related Matters, NAPTIP, has confirmed the arrest of a notorious Benin-based girl-trafficker.
The trafficker known as Rhoda Omorogie, alias Mama Bobo has been involved in the trafficking of young girls from Benin to Europe.
NAPTIP disclosed this in a statement it released through the Head of Press and Pwublic Relations, Josiah Emerole in Abuja on Wednesday.
The Agency’s Operatives in Benin Zonal Command arrested the suspect at about 5 a.m of Tuesday at her residence located at No.65 Osayande St, off Upper Sakponda Road, Benin City.
According to Emerole, “The suspect, Ms Omorogie, a nurse by profession who had been in the hiding since June 16 following the arrest of one of her gang members, is an indigene of Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State”.
“Preliminary reports showed that Ms. Omorogie has over the years been involved in the recruitment of young women from Benin to other places including Europe”
“The report also revealed that she was connected to the recruitment of the three victims that were rescued in Benin at the weekend” he added.
Director-General of NAPTIP, Julie Oka-Donli, was quoted by the statement as saying that “it is disheartening to see women involved in the “disgusting trade of human beings’’.
Julie urged the people to be more careful while dealing with the traffickers.
Emerole added that the notorious trafficker is presently in NAPTIP’s custody for interrogation.
NAPTIP, said it has convicted 47 people for child trafficking-related offences in Edo and Delta States.
