Yenagoa – The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has re-opened an oil well shut by the people of Ogboinbiri in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area in Bayelsa.
The Commandant of the corps in the state, Mr Desmond Agu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on telephone on Tuesday that the command brokered peace between the community and the operator of the well, Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC).
Agu said that following the intervention, the company had resumed production.
He said that members of the command on patrol ensured that the facility was re-opened and remained in production while the parties were encouraged to embrace the dialogue option.
He maintained that the command remained resolute in its mandate to protect national assets in the state.
The Ogboinbiri community blocked the wellhead following a disagreement with the multinational oil firm that operates in the area.
The community reportedly accused the oil firm of breach of a memorandum of understanding it entered with Ogboinbiri while its people resorted to shutting down the facility to protest the breach.
