Kuje (FCT) – The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has called on the Kuje Area Council to establish a formal parking garage for Tipper operators in the area.
Mr Idris Ndama, the branch Chairman of the union made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Kuje.
Ndama said creating the tipper garage would ensure smooth traffic flow, boost businesses and internally generated revenue of the council.
He urged the new council administration to provide adequate space for parking of tippers.
He said lack of proper tipper garage had contributed to the regular traffic often caused by heavy trucks in the area.
The chairman noted that the operators pay N500 daily as revenue, nothing had been done to construct a proper garage for heavy duty trucks.
He identified inadequate space and bad access road linking the Kuje-Gwagwalada and the temporary Tipper garage located opposite AZMAN filling station, describing it as very dangerous.
He therefore appealed to the new to make provisions for proper parking garage where trucks could be parked to achieve the aforementioned goals.
“We don’t have enough space to park our vehicles, when rain falls, our trucks get stuck in the mud and cause serious damage thereby hindering our business.
“Every day we pay N500 to the Local Government authority as revenue tax, yet they have not been able to build a tipper garage,’’ he said.
Ndama revealed that the union had made several fruitless efforts to address the challenge with the previous administration.
However, he urged the new council chairman to redeem his campaign promise to them to make his members have confidence in the administration. (NAN)
