LAFIA – The Nasarawa State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has appealed to the Nasarawa Government to build more motor parks in Lafia to reduce traffic obstruction on the roads.
Mr Usman Jajeru, the State Secretary of the union, spoke on the appeal on Thursday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lafia, Nasarawa.
The secretary said that the union had written to the state government on the issue and they had promised to look into the appeal.
He suggested that the state government should make one of the parks a modern one for heavy trucks to remove bottlenecks and ease flow of traffic in the state.
According to him, the new parks will also help to increase internally generated revenue in the state.
Jajeru said that most accidents recorded in the state were caused by speeding, violation of traffic rules and illegal parking of vehicles on the roads by drivers.
He urged commercial drivers to drop and pick passengers only at designated motor parks.
According to him, the union has directed all its branches to intensify patrol to prevent drivers from picking passengers outside the motor parks.
“This is because of the security challenges the country is facing now.
“Any driver that is caught loading passengers outside the park will face disciplinary action,” he said.
He also appealed to passengers to always board commercial vehicles from government designated parks for their safety. (NAN)
