Abeokuta – The Ogun House of Assembly on Monday reiterated its commitment to initiate relevant legislative bills that would lead to sustained collaboration between government and relevant stakeholders to promote healthy society.
The Speaker of the House, Mr Suraj Adekunbi, gave the assurance when he received a delegation of the state’s chapter of the Christian Health Association of Nigeria (CHAN) in Abeokuta, led by its Chairman, Rev. Christopher Ogunupebi.
Adekunbi assured that genuine non-governmental organisations would continue to enjoy the support of the state legislature.
He added that more bills that would promote affordable healthcare services to the people would be sponsored by lawmakers.
He explained that healthcare service, which was part of social responsibilities of government in promoting a healthy society remained of topmost priority
to the present administration, especially at the grassroots.
He said “as an arm of government, we assure you of sustained collaboration in ensuring optimum performances in the health sector through robust legislation.
“Government will continue to create an enabling environment for stakeholders to continue to render selfless service to humanity.”
Earlier, Ogunupebi had commended the state government for the various health programmes and policies which it initiated, including the roll back malaria, HIV Control, Araya and Tuberculosis projects/ intervention, as well as immunisations.
He said that the programmes had contributed toward ensuring a disease-free society.
He noted that the main purpose of CHAN was to give quality healthcare to communities and to support the Mission Institutes, particularly in difficult terrain.
“While appreciating government support, we will appreciate a consideration of some of our fundamental needs, either individually or through legislation.
“We will appreciate the inclusion of CHAN mission institutes into the state’s community health insurance scheme.
“As faith-based health institutions and considering our number and contributions at the grassroots, CHAN should be included in the health policy making and budgeting of the state.” (NAN)
