Before the inception of the Nigeria Defence Academy in 1964, the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst was instrumental in shaping the skills of Nigeria’s finest military leaders.
Breaking barriers and marking a historic milestone, Officer Cadet Owowoh Princess Oluchukwu emerges as the first-ever Nigerian female officer to graduate from Sandhurst.
In a statement by Atinuke Akande-Alegbe, Senior Communications & Public Diplomacy Officer at the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office in Abuja, it was announced that 24-year-old Oluchukwu was among the 135 Officer Cadets to graduate during RMAS’ Sovereign’s Parade in London.
Oluchukwu’s journey began in 2018 at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in Kaduna, where she demonstrated exceptional leadership, starting as a cadet lance corporal in her second year.
Reflecting on her achievements, Oluchukwu expressed her commitment to representing Nigeria with pride and making a positive impact on the global stage.
Throughout her tenure, Oluchukwu excelled, rising to the rank of cadet sergeant in her fourth year and being appointed company senior under officer Charlie (CSUO C) in her fifth year, a position never before held by a female officer in the academy’s history.
Not only did she demonstrate prowess in leadership, but Oluchukwu also excelled academically, achieving first-class honors in biological sciences during her fourth year.
In her statement, Oluchukwu humbly acknowledged the collective effort that contributed to her success, recognizing the unwavering support of her family, mentors, instructors, and numerous individuals who believed in her journey.
As she embarks on her future endeavors, Oluchukwu remains steadfast in her commitment to uphold Nigeria’s honor and contribute positively to the global community.
Among the distinguished alumni of RMAS are notable figures such as Yakubu Gowon, former head of state, and Emmanuel Undiandeye, chief of defense intelligence, further solidifying the institution’s legacy in shaping Nigeria’s military leadership.
