Goma – A one-day general strike on Tuesday brought trade and transport to partial standstill in several Congolese cities as opposition tried to pressure President Joseph Kabila to hold elections according to schedule.
Witnesses said that in Kinshasa, demonstrators set a bus on fire and stoned its driver and a police officer, who were injured.
They also reported that there were clashes between protesters and police in Goma in the east.
The president of the national electoral commission earlier said that voters were still being registered and that elections would not be held this year, in spite being due in November.
Eve Bazaiba, from the opposition party, Movement for the Liberation of Congo, said that the opposition was concerned that Kabila, who was not eligible to seek a third term in office, was trying to extend his rule.
