Pakistan claims killing 1,150 militants in months-long offensive

ISLAMABAD – The Pakistani army said on Wednesday in Islamabad, that more than 1,150 militants have been killed in operations in the troubled north-west tribal regions.

Maj. Asim Bajwa, military spokesman said that more than 1,100 rebels were killed in an offensive launched in mid-June in North Waziristan, once considered a stronghold of al-Qaeda linked militants.

He said another 44 Taliban fighters were killed in other operation that started earlier this month in the Khyber tribal district, through which NATO supply trucks pass to enter Afghanistan.

Bajwa said more than 100 soldiers have been killed in the fighting, while the forces also recovered 132.5 tonnes of explosives and 2 million tonnes of ammunition from North Waziristan.

“We will kill all militants indiscriminately and clearance is happening and the way it is progressing, we are certain militancy will end from here forever”, he said.

He blamed neighbouring Afghanistan for a lack of cooperation as several militants have fled across the porous border. (dpa/NAN)
