Ramallah – Palestinians on Tuesday warned that a move of the United States Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem would constitute a grave violation.
They said the movement of the Embassy is a violation of international and humanitarian law as well as United Nations resolutions.
U.S. president-elect Donald Trump named David Friedman as his ambassador to Israel.
Friedman, a strong supporter of Israel’s right-wing government, advocates moving the embassy to Jerusalem in spite of long standing U.S. policy against such a move.
“Embarking on such a move is a grave violation of international and humanitarian law and UN resolutions, is evidently biased toward Israel.
“And would legitimise its crimes and absolve it from its 49-year-long occupation,’’ the Palestinian government said.
It called on Arab and Islamic countries to take a firm stand against this move.
Saeb Erekat, Secretary General of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), had also said that the PLO would revoke all signed agreements with Israel.
Erekat equally said that PLO will withdraw its recognition of the Jewish state if the embassy is actually moved to Jerusalem.
He told a meeting in Washington DC through video conference on Monday that such a move would kill any hope of peace in the region.
