Panic has gripped residents of Jos, the Plateau State capital, following rumours that security agents have uncovered a cache of arms at Angwan Rogo community of Jos North Local Government Area of the State.
Security operatives, however, has debunked the rumoured arms cache.
Angwan Rogo, is a slum, predominantly dominated by Muslims.
The settlement is close to the University of Jos, and was a hotspot during the 2001 and subsequent crises that led to the death of scores of people, including students.
The cache was said to have been discovered by the operatives of the Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), also known as the Special Task Force (STF), operating in Plateau.
STF was said to have, acting on intelligence reports, raided a property that was allegedly being used as an arms and ammunition storage on Monday evening.
Assorted weapons, including rocket launchers were recovered hidden in the building, while suspects were arrested.
However, the Commander of OPSH, Maj. Gen. Rogers Nicholas, told Sundiata Post in an interview that the information was false.
He assured residents of the city to go about their lawful duties as the information has spread to cause panic and raised fear among the populace.
“I can assure you that nothing like that happened. People should stop spreading such rumours. We are in control of the security situation in Plateau, and I am assuring them of their safety. They should go about their duties lawfully,” Nicholas said.
