Lagos- Some parents who registered their children for the ongoing NNPC/Chevron on Friday in Lagos said that they were confident they could be groomed to stardom.
They told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the sport would develop the skills of their children and hoped the camp would bring their best.
Segun Adeosun, a trader, whose son, Femi (13), is attending the programme for the second time, expressed happiness saying that the organisers were making the dreams of the children come true.
“I am very happy to be here, I encourage my son who loves to play tennis and desires to play it at the international scene in the future.
“Sports is very essential to the development of the child, indeed, I am confident the camp will impart the right training on the children,’’ Adeosun said.
Another parent, Ishaq Mustapha, an artisan, told NAN that his child encouraged him to develop special interest in tennis because he was always watching it he tennis on the television.
“My son is a sport lover and because he was always tuning the channel to tennis, because of his love for the sport, that has made me like the sport.
“ I will encourage him as long as he still has the flair to play the sport to become a good player in future.
“I thank the organisers for such opportunities given to these young ones.
“The tennis clinic has afforded our youths the opportunity to meet and make friends and listen to coaches other than what they are used to at school,,’’ he said.
Kemi Shonike, a business woman, told NAN that her son, Fola, 14, loved tennis and had been playing it in the last eight years.
He is now desirous to be an international player, Shonike said.
“The clinic has done well over the years in teaching the youths the right things of life, especially, how to be responsible.
“They also teach the basic skills of tennis and yearly I have been seen my son growing in the game,’’ she said.
Ikechukwu Okafor, another business man, also said that the clinic was a good initiative by the organizers.
Okafor said that his daughter loved tennis with a passion and she troubled him to bring her over.
He said, “I want my child to grow up to be responsible and make independent choices, this is why I believe in bringing her to the clinic.’’
NAN reports that the three-week long tennis event which started on Aug. 29 to end in Sept. 16, has been witnessing players drilled on the basic techniques in tennis.
No fewer than 100 players were registered for the tennis clinic.
