Pankshin (Plateau) – Mr Stephen Jings, Management Committee Chairman, Pankshin Local Government Area of Plateau, has urged the people to be law-abiding during and after the by-election in the two units on Saturday.
The Court of Appeal in Jos had in its judgment on April 11 House of Assembly election, ordered INEC to conduct fresh elections in Nyelleng polling unit of Fier ward in Pankshin North and Pyabor polling unit in Chip ward respectively to determine the winners.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that INEC has fixed Saturday as the date for the by-election in the two constituencies to be held simultaneously.
NAN also reports that Jings, who doubles as the Chairman, Plateau branch of ALGON gave the advice in Pankshin on Friday.
Jings noted that the by-elections were “too crucial’’ for the council to allow them to be disrupted or discredited by any person or group.
“All we are praying for is for the by-elections to be held in a very calm and peaceful atmosphere in the two constituencies to determine representatives of the constituencies.
“This is the more reason why I am appealing to our people to be law-abiding and not to allow anyone use them for any nocturnal activity, “ he said.
The chairman said that the supplementary election should not be a `do or die affair` but an exercise that would deepen democracy and enhance the development of the council.
He said no society or nation could thrive in an atmosphere of chaos and rancour and appealed to citizens to display maturity as the electorate exercised their franchise.
