The police have issued an apology over the erroneous report of the arrest of prominent #EndSARS activist, Obianuju Catherine Udeh, popularly known as DJ Switch. It was initially reported the “arrest” based on confirmation from the Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin. However, DJ Switch promptly refuted the claims on social media, asserting that she was never arrested.
Following DJ Switch’s clarification, SP Benjamin Hundeyin took to his X account to apologize for the misinformation. He acknowledged the mix-up and clarified that the arrested individual was DJ Commissioner Wysei, not DJ Switch. Hundeyin extended apologies to media outlets such as Lindaikeji, BBC, and TVC, as well as to DJ Switch herself.
In response to the false reports, DJ Switch expressed her frustration with the situation, highlighting the dangers of spreading unverified information. She criticized blogs for prioritizing traffic over accuracy and emphasized the negative impact of such false reporting on public perception. DJ Switch asserted that the misinformation amounted to defamation of her character and demanded that the blogs retract the false news within the day and issue corrections. Despite being advised to pursue legal action, she expressed her reluctance and urged the media to uphold journalistic integrity.
