Lagos – A 24-year-old man, Onyedikachi Ogbonna, charged with stabbing one Mr Chigozie Nwadike with a broken bottle, was on Thursday granted N100,000 bail by a Lagos court.
The magistrate, Mr M.A. Etti, who gave the ruling at an Apapa Magistrates’ Court, told the accused to produce two sureties as part of the bail conditions.
Etti said the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Olusegun Kokoye, told the court that the accused, who entered a not-guilty plea, committed the offence on May 22 at Maza-Maza Bus Stop, Lagos.
Kokoye said that the accused, who resides at Apapa area of Lagos, is facing a charge of assault
He alleged that the accused assaulted Nwadike by beating him up and stabbing him with a broken bottle all over his body.
Kokoye said that the assault was as a result of an argument which ensued between the accused and the complainant.
He said efforts by other pedestrians at the scene of the incident to settle the dispute proved abortive.
The prosecutor said Nwadike reported the case to the police and the accused was arrested.
He said the offences contravened Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 173 prescribes three years jail term for a person convicted of assault occasioning harm.
The case was adjourned until Aug. 21 for mention.
