Abakaliki – The Ebonyi Police Command says that it will release the corpse of Emmanuel Igwe who committed suicide on Friday to his family.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Igwe’s lifeless body was found dangling on a tree at Ishieke Area of Abakaliki and was retrieved by the police.
ASP Loveth Odah, the command’s spokesperson, who disclosed this to NAN on Sunday, said the release was at the family’s instance.
“The wife of the deceased said the family was not suspecting any foul play over his death and requested that his corpse be handed over for burial.
“She further revealed that the deceased had been battling with depression over a lingering problem which made him to commit suicide.
“The wife also said that though efforts were made to support him all through his travails, no one suspected that he would commit suicide.
“The police will therefore release the corpse immediately to the family because it is a no-case situation,” she said.
A neighbour of the deceased, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told NAN that Igwe battled with a debilitating sore on his leg.
The neighbour said that the deceased spent all he had to seek medication for his condition.
“His family took him to several hospitals and herbal homes but all was to no avail.
“He was a jovial and hardworking man who catered adequately for his family and his death is still shocking to all who knew him,” the neighbour said.
