A well-known restaurant owner, known as Oforma (also referred to as Ofor Onye Ofe Olugbu), was tragically shot dead on Monday night at Ogrute roundabout in Igboeze North Local Government Area of Enugu State by vigilante operatives from the Neighbourhood Watch.
According to eyewitnesses, the security team had visited Oforma’s restaurant to arrest someone, but they encountered resistance. This led to a confrontation between the restaurant owner and the security operatives, resulting in Oforma being shot in the back by one of the security personnel.
In the chaos that ensued, the security operatives fled the scene, leaving behind their vehicle which was subsequently set on fire by enraged youths. Oforma was rushed to St. Mary’s Hospital Ogrute where he was pronounced dead in the early hours of Tuesday.
A viral video captured the neighborhood watch group’s vehicle engulfed in flames, reflecting the heightened tension in the area as locals reacted to the incident.
Reports indicate that the youths have initiated a search for the fleeing security personnel, while a group called Concerned Igboeze North Youths (CINY) expressed grief over the loss of Oforma and called for urgent investigations to apprehend the perpetrators.
The Enugu Police Command had not issued a statement regarding the incident at the time of this report.
