ABUJA – The Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS) has confirmed a minor riot by inmates at Zaria Central Prison in Kaduna State on Thursday.
It, however, said that the situation had been brought under control.
Mr Francis Enobore, the NPS spokesman, confirmed the development in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
“There was actually a minor incident at the Zaria prison today (Thursday) but the situation has been brought under control by our men.
“ I don’t have details of the incident now, am still trying to gather the facts but I can assure you that I will keep you updated as soon as I get the details,’’ he said.
He said that the NPS had been doing a lot lately to stop jailbreaks and prison attacks in line with the directive of the new comptroller General of Prisons, Dr Peter Ekpendu.
Enobore said that NPS in collaboration with other security agencies had beefed up security in and around the prison following the unfortunate incident.
He called on residents of Zaria to remain calm and report any suspicious movement to the nearest security agency
Earlier, the Assistant Comptroller General of Nigeria Prison Service in-charge of Zone B, Alhaji Usman Bello-Kaina, said two people were injured in the incident.
“There was riot in the prison but we have quelled the riot and there were no deaths recorded.
“We thank God there is no loss of life but two people have sustained injuries and are responding to treatment in the hospital,’’ he said.
