Port Harcourt – Rivers United FC of Port Harcourt Captain, Festus Austin, on Friday expressed hope that his team will emerge champions of the 2015/2016 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season.
This is contained in a statement issued in Port Harcourt by Sammy Wejinya, Media Officer of the club.
Austin said United was capable of unsettling any team ahead of them and claim unlikely success in the NPFL this season.
He said a number of factors have been responsible for the club’s unlikely push for the top prize this season.
“The secret behind our success has been hard work and discipline. Coach Stanley Eguma has also been extremely important as he continues stressing that we need to fight for the league title.
“I thank the players because they listen to what the coach says and we are assuring our fans that we will continue to fight until we deliver the league title,” he said.
Austin said he was well aware of the task his side would face if they were to avoid defeat against Kano Pillars FC on Aug. 21.
“Kano is a very difficult place to go to but we have the belief that we will win.
“We are not going for a draw because at this stage of the season, no one can drop points if they want to be champions.
“Pillars have very good players and they will have their fans behind them, but we will try to win,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that United won the reverse fixture in Port Harcourt 1-0 with Bernard Ovoke scoring the game’s only goal at the Yakubu Gown Stadium.
Rivers United currently occupies third place on the NPFL standings with 50 points from 30 matches while Pillars sit in 10th position with 42 points from 30 games. (NAN)
