Ishiagu (Ebonyi) -The traditional ruler of Ishiagu in Ebonyi, Eze Moses Ngele, and two others have commended the state government for its timely intervention in the boundary dispute in the area recently.
The trio who made the commendation in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ishiagu on Friday noted that the interface between the Ebonyi and Abia state governments forestalled further clashes at the border area.
The reactions followed the dispute that erupted between the people of Ishiagu and those of Lokpanta in Abia about a month ago.
Ngele described the people of Ishiagu as peace-loving, saying they had lived in peace with their neighbours.
He said that the community would support every effort aimed at achieving lasting peace among the communities.
“We are happy for the early intervention of the government of Ebonyi which prevented the escalation of violence between the affected communities.
“The Deputy Governor of the state, Dr Kelechi Igwe, has been meeting with his counterpart from Abia to resolve the matter and achieve lasting peace.
“We are peace-loving people and have lived in peace with our neighbouring communities, hence, we will support every effort aimed at bringing lasting peace in the two communities,’’ Ngele said.
Ngele said that there was no alternative to peace and urged parties in the boundary dispute to embrace dialogue.
Similarly, the President of Ishiagu Community Development Union, Mr Stanley Anyim, said the quick intervention by both the Ebonyi and Abia governments prevented unwarranted bloodletting.
“The Ebonyi government responded on time by initiating peace parley with its Abia counterpart and I believe the effort yielded fruit.
“The prevention of violence in the disputed area has prevented any loss of lives and we support any effort that will sustain the existing peace,’’ Anyim said.
He called for joint policing of the disputed area to prevent hoodlums from undermining the peace process.
A member of the community, Mr Emeka Ogbonna, said that the timely intervention of the government prevented the communities from engaging in senseless inter-communal war.
“It would have been a bad omen for the sister communities if the government had not waded into the matter and averted what would have been an inter-communal war.
