Abuja- The Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) said on Wednesday that it would partner with foreign investors in building a driving academy and vehicle assembly centre.

The National President of RTEAN, Chief Musa Shehu, said this in Abuja while addressing newsmen on the association’s upcoming National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.

“We are discussing with Bosch, a German car assembly company and another engineering company in Germany, who want to partner with us to build a driving academy and an assembly plant.

“We are also into partnership with the Federal Ministry of Works on workshops. We are going to bring foreign partners to assemble vehicles in those workshops.”

Commenting on the devaluation of the naira by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Shehu said it would negatively affect the transport system as it would increase the cost of importing vehicles.

“But if we encourage the establishment of assembly plants in Nigeria then, we can have vehicles that will be affordable.’’

He said the association was keen on improving members’ welfare.

“We want to put 100 vehicles on Lagos, Abuja, Anambra and Enugu routes.”

He, however, advised members to shun any form of violence and avoid being used as political thugs in the forthcoming general elections in the country.

He urged drivers and passengers to be security conscious as the yuletide approaches and contribute their quota towards the security of the country.

“Security is a collective responsibility; it is not for the security agents alone. Everyone has a role to play in the security system,” Shehu said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the association’s Annual General Meeting holds in Abuja on Thursday. (NAN)
