Abuja – The Rwandan High Commission to Nigeria on Tuesday said it would commemorate the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi for the 22nd time on Thursday in Abuja.
The information is contained in a statement issued by Amb. Stanislas Kamanzi, the Rwandan High Commissioner to Nigeria, made available in Abuja.
Kamanzi said the theme for this year’s commemoration was “Fighting the Genocide Ideology.”
He added that the commemoration of the genocide was for Rwanda and the entire international community to recollect the ultimate breach to human dignity.
He said “this ultimate breach of human dignity resulted into loss of more than one million people in just 100 days.
“The commemoration is also to pay tribute to victims of that ignominious act.”
The envoy explained that during the commemorative period in Rwanda, communities assembled and reflected on the theme of the year and resolve
to commit anew to “Never Again”.
He said the commemoration of the genocide would enable Rwanda to consolidate on the dearly recovered national unity.
According to him, the commemoration will further afford communities in Rwanda the opportunity to build a solid and prosperous nation, propelled by
the lessons from the past.
“Moreover, activities are undertaken to provide genocide survivors with necessary moral and material support, with particular attention to the most vulnerable within communities.
“The Rwandan High Commission takes this opportunity to express its most sincere gratitude to all those dedicated to the cause of fighting the genocide ideology.
“The high commission also appreciates those who will make time to be part of the marking of the Kwibuka22 in Abuja and elsewhere in Nigeria,” he said.
Kamanzi said high government functionaries, the diplomatic corps and various friends of Rwanda would join members of the Rwandan community in Abuja to honour the victims. (NAN)
