Vice President Namadi Sambo at the last minute was drafted by President Goodluck Jonathan to represent him at the ECOWAS Emergency Summit on the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) which is still ravaging Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. The meeting is holding in Accra, Ghana.
Jonathan could not make the trip due to prolonged mediation talks in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, where he travelled to on Wednesday as a member of the three-man delegation of Heads of State and Government raised by the ECOWAS states to facilitate the rapid resolution of the current political
crisis in Burkina Faso.
He did not return to the country until in the early hours of Thursday and as a result asked Sambo to represent him at the Accra summit.
The emergency summit is also being attended by representatives of the United Nations and the World Health Organisation.
Others that made the summit were the acting Minister of Health, Dr. Khaliru Alhassan and the Director of the National Centre for Disease Control, Dr. Abdulsalami Nasidi.
Nigeria availed the gathering of the benefit of Nigeria’s successful containment of the deadly EVD
after it entered the country in July this year through the late Patrick Sawyer, the Liberian-American.
