I have seen the outrage over the Elizabeth Ochanya girl. I love Nigerians when it comes to issues like this. But I am not cut for the sudden activism that has trailed the unfortunate saga. And I will explain why.
It was painful that Elizabeth was a victim of rape but around us, including those shouting “Justice for Ochanya” there are many Ochanyas. They may not be victims of rape but of rapacious abuse and acute maltreatment.
In the next flat to you, someone’s daughter is being used like a slave. Someone’s son is being abused everyday by a wicked “aunty”. You even have suspicions that the “oga” in the house might be having carnal knowledge of their 15 year-old house help. You see that 12 year-old who fetches almost FIFTY rounds of water every blessed day.
In all these, you look the other side. You play the blind and act the deaf and dumb. When these poor souls cave in and succumb to their traumas, you now become social media activists.
We might never know nor sure, but there might have been a couple neighbours who were aware of Ochanya’s travails. But now, they are likely part of the “Justice for Ochanya” orchestra.
It is better to SPEAK out against evil acts than MOURNING and ‘ADVOCATING’ for victims when our wailings, advocacies and cries mean nothing to them anymore.
The alleged killers of Ochanya might spend the rest of their lives in jail.
But let us, in our respective areas, speak out against another Ochanya “in the making”. They are all around us.
May the innocent soul of Lizzy Ochanya find rest in her Creator’s bosom.
