Abuja (Sundiata Post) – Stakeholders in Nigeria’s electoral democracy have urged the national assembly to help consolidate the gains made in Nigerian democratic experiment by strengthening the 1999 constitution of the country.
They made the call in a communiqué issued at the end of the 3-day annual National Political summit organized by the Save Democracy Group – Africa, with the theme: “Nigerian Democracy, Constitutional Development and leadership Recruitment”.
According to the stakeholders, to consolidate the gains made in Nigeria democratic experiment, the 1999 constitution needs to be strengthened, especially in the area of electoral laws to enthrone credible process of leadership recruitment.
The communiqué noted that the absence of internal democracy in political parties in Nigeria is responsible for the defective nature of leadership recruitment, which in turn breeds bitterness.
Also, the stakeholders condemned the thriving insecurity in the country caused by herdsmen attacks in various communities and the activities of militants in the Niger-Delta regions and kidnapping in parts of Nigeria.
Adding that these constitute heavy threats on the corporate existence of the country.
